Streat Helsinki – Promoting street food

Helsinki is proudly building the best street food initiative in the world. Streat Helsinki showcases a one-of-a-kind street food conference, a street food festival spicing up the Nordic capital, as well as a world class street food party.

Streat Helsinki will be taking its first steps during 21–22 March 2014 as a set of three events. The TALKS conference is held as a part of the Gastro Helsinki fair, while EATS and PARTIES take over the flourishing cultural districts and street food hubs of the Tori Quarters and the Abattoir.

- We are bringing the top players of the street food scene to Helsinki, and we want to offer everyone the opportunity to get acquainted with the possibilities of street kitchens. While doing so, we also want to push cities into making good decisions regarding the development of street food, says Ville Relander, project manager of Helsinki\'s Food Culture Strategy.

TALKS conference to bring together top international speakers

The likes of Streat Helsinki TALKS have yet to be witnessed in the northern hemisphere. Organised jointly with the Gastro Helsinki fair, the conference will bring together hundreds of street food ambassadors, doers and supporters. During the day we will learn lessons from business incubators, get inspired by street food revolutions around the world, and enjoy success stories from the field.

Top international street food spokespeople at the conference include editor-in-chief Chris Ying of the highly acclaimed food journal Lucky Peach, Brooklyn Flea and Smorgasburg co-founder Eric Demby from New York, business development manager Geetika Agrawal and executive director Caleb Zigas of San Francisco kitchen incubator La Cocina, founder of London\'s MEATliquor and food entrepreneur Yianni Papoutsis, Roskilde Festival\'s food strategist Mikkel Sander, founder of London\'s first kitchen incubator Kitchenette, Cynthia Shanmugalingam, and the Italian street food star of Cape Town Food Trucks fame Luca Castiglione. Chairman of the conference day is the Finnish food journalist and writer Kenneth Nars.

- At the end of the day we will surely gain a better understanding of what street food is, could be and will be. We want to open up a discussion that leads to better practical solutions already in the near future. Moreover, the unprecedented conference is free of charge. Street food culture has no place for elitism and exclusivity - we warmly welcome everyone along, Ville Relander says.

The Streat Helsinki TALKS is organised at the Helsinki Exhibition and Convention Centre on Friday 21 March at 9AM - 4PM. The pre-registration is now open at www.streathelsinki.com. While free of charge, there is a limited capacity.

EATS serves street food treats for all in the heart of Helsinki

Streat Helsinki EATS invites everyone to try out pioneering street food at the Tori Quarters, the historical centre of Helsinki where the heart of the old town meets the new buzz of the city.

Dozens of Finnish and international vendors gather to set an example of what street food is all about in 2014. The street kitchens are open on Saturday 22 March from 11AM to 7PM. The festival area is open for all and free of charge. In addition to food, and a festive atmosphere, EATS also features performances and other programming. A collective meal in fresh air is already an urban adventure in itself.

International street kitchens have produced several big stars. Some of these will be present in Helsinki to give a taste of their treats. Naturally, a big group of Finnish street food pioneers will also be present.

PARTIES calls all street food revolutionaries to celebrate

The nighttime street food revolution - Streat Helsinki PARTIES - takes place on Friday 21 March at 7PM - 2AM in Helsinki\'s food culture brewery, the Abattoir. Friday night at restaurant Kellohalli is a celebration of local street food complemented by Streat Helsinki\'s international guests, good music and a drink or two. Heading the culinary revelry are Helsinki-based chefs and food culture promoters Sasu Laukkonen and Richard McCormick.

Party tickets go on sale on February 3 at Tiketti (www.tiketti.fi). Tickets are priced from 38 € (including handling fees) and in addition to the night\'s programme include a street food menu designed by Laukkonen and McCormick.

Streat Helsinki is backed by a large group of supporters

- Food is fun, good and important. It is even more meaningful when we prepare it, eat it and celebrate it together. That is why Streat Helsinki is first and foremost an invitation to understand the central message: the makings of a better street food city, Ville Relander summarises.

The main force behind Streat Helsinki is the City of Helsinki\'s Food Culture Strategy team, joined by several local and international partners. The event production by the Tori Quarters, the Abattoir and the Helsinki Exhibition and Convention Centre is supported by ministries and small businesses alike. In practice, the events are a collaboration of a big group of communities, food activists, professionals, amateurs, entrepreneurs, and other hungry street foodies.
